This is another co-writing project between myself and Gigi (Rethinking Life Blog). Just as before, nothing is discussed, prepared or planned and we have no idea where it will lead. Please click on the links below for previous chapters:

The Target 13

“Please, sisters, you must be tired. We have prepared a feast and a room. After you have eaten and rested, we will have much to discuss.”

“Kat,” I said squeezing my sister’s hand, “personally, I’d love to get this over and done with, but I know you’re tired and hungry…your choice?”

“I’m not going to be much use without sustenance and rest, Z. I think we should accept their offer, listen to what they have say and then decide once we have all the facts.”

“Can’t argue with that,” I said to Kat, “lead the way,” I said waving my hand at the Priest.

He nodded, turned and walked back the way he’d come. Kat and I followed him through the crowd that parted like the Red Sea, and the Priest led us to a chamber that contained two beds and platters of food.

“Please, sisters, take as long as you like.” With that, he nodded again and disappeared around the corner.

“Good thinking, Kat,” I said, closing the door, taking my ritual knife out of its holster and slicing the air between us. “Dammit, it’s not working,” I said, trying a second time.

“My guess is that they’ve somehow bound our powers.”

“Okay, plan B. I suggest we have some food and then take turns to sleep,” I said to Kat. We’re vulnerable enough as it is, we don’t want to make it any easier for them to take advantage of us. You first.”

“I’m glad to be back with my sister,” Kat said, her face beaming.

The food and rest was a godsend, and, when our brains and bodies were recharged, we discussed exactly what information we needed to extract from the Priest, and, should the need arise, a plan of action to deal with the Keepers.

A few hours later, we were sitting on the floor, in the center of a large circle; the Priest, Kat and I were sitting in the center, facing each other, then another group of Keepers sat in a circle around us, another group sat around them, and so on.

“Okay, tell us everything you know about the prophesy,” I said to the Priest.

He nodded. “As I said before, the prophesy states that ”Sisters, pale, like the two moons above, will arrive by water and set us free. They will appear at a time in history when the earth’s destruction hangs in the balance. A time when the Patriarch Cycle has run its course, having effectuated much damage. The sisters have been chosen to reintroduce the Matriarch Cycle – the original cycle – the cycle that birthed, nurtured and protected all life. The sister’s have the power to heal the earth. A new earth where cruelty and suffering are nothing more than an historical concept.”

“You must be joking,” I said, looking from the Priest to Kat and back again.

“I understand that this is a lot to process, but I assure you, sisters, it is no joke.”

“Was there really a time when Matriarch’s ruled?” Kat asked in wonder.

“Yes,” the Priest said, “the Sumerian god entrusted us with many ancient scripts and historical records.”

“Why have we never heard of these Matriarchal civilizations?” Kat asked, clearly fascinated.”

“Because it is a threat. The patriarchal system is founded on fear and submission, power and control. The principles of Matriarchy are in direct opposition.”

“Well, this all sounds beautifully poetic and ideal,” I interrupted, sarcasm dripping off my tongue, “please, Kat, tell me you’re not buying this bullshit?”

“Aren’t you just a little curious, Z?” Kat said to me, cocking her head to one side.

“It’s not a case of interest,” I said to Kat, my voice rising an octave, “it’s absurd.”

“May I?” the Priest said, trying to get our attention again.

We both nodded.

“Dichotomy is the makeup of the universe. When there is an imbalance in that dichotomy, the universe reacts – sometimes with positive effect and sometimes with negative.”

“Yeah, I get all that. The world, earth, whatever, is imbalanced because there’s more negative than positive. I still don’t see how we fit into this whole equation. What’s so special about us?”

“Your bloodline. Your gift. Your destiny,” the Priest said, matter of factly.

“I don’t believe in destiny,” I snapped, “I believe that we make our own choices in life.”

“And yet, here you are,” the Priest said to me. “Destiny or not, your choices have indeed brought you here.”

“Okay, let’s accept your hypothesis for a moment and think about this logically. If Kat and I are the chosen one’s, how on earth can the two of us be expected to reintroduce the Matriarchal system?”

“I have to agree with my sister on that point,” Kat said, nodding at the Priest.

“It is not a question of HOW, for that is clearly explained in the Prophesy, but rather, a question of WHEN.”

“Of course,” I snapped, “the Prophesy has all the answer’s. So what about this third secret and the curse. How come the Prophesy doesn’t have the answer’s to those burning questions?” I said, my anger and sarcasm palpable.

“It’s not that we don’t have the answer’s,” the Priest said, looking at me and Kat, “the answer’s will only be revealed once you accept your destiny.”

To be continued…
